As The World Turns And Dawson's Creek Alum James Van Der Beek Passed Away At 48
“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning,” she wrote. “He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity, and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now, we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
From Daytime to Primetime Stardom
Van Der Beek was at the beginning of his acting career when he secured one of his first roles on the CBS daytime drama As the World Turns, portraying Stephen Anderson in 1995, the son of Kirk Anderson, played by Tom Wiggin. Only three years later, his career skyrocketed to fame when he took on the iconic role of Dawson Leery in the popular teen series Dawson's Creek, which turned him into a household name.

A Versatile Career
Outside of primetime, Van Der Beek gained recognition in film with the hit sports drama Varsity Blues, and later took on roles in series such as Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23, where he humorously played an exaggerated version of himself. Fans will additionally see him posthumously in the upcoming Elle, set to premiere in July 2026 on Amazon Prime.
A Devoted Family Man
On August 1, 2010, Van Der Beek tied the knot with Kimberly Brook, and the couple has since welcomed six children: Olivia, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn, Joshua, and Jeremiah. He often expressed how much joy and stability his family provided him.
A Private Battle With Cancer
The actor was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer in August 2023, but he chose not to disclose his diagnosis publicly until November 2024. Throughout this challenging journey, he approached his illness with the same grace and introspection that won the affection of many.
