Beyond the Gates Celebrates HBCU History With Banneker University Homecoming
Beyond the Gates is getting ready to celebrate Homecoming — and the CBS soap is putting Banneker University and HBCU tradition front and center.
CBS released a sneak preview of Friday’s episode, featuring Vernon (Clifton Davis) and Anita (Tamara Tunie) preparing for their family’s arrival to celebrate Banneker University’s Homecoming with tailgating at their home before the big game.
The social media post promises that the Homecoming celebration will unfold across Friday and Monday’s episodes, giving viewers a chance to see another side of the Duprees and their family history.
Beyond the Gates Celebrates HBCU History With Banneker University Homecoming
Five Generations of Banneker Pride
One of the sweetest moments from the preview comes when Vernon and Anita talk about just how deeply Banneker University runs through their family.
“Five generations at Banneker, Anita,” Vernon proudly points out.
The family is also preparing to capture the occasion for the next generation, with talk of making sure they get pictures of Tyrell during the festivities.
It’s a small scene, but it establishes something much bigger: Banneker isn’t simply a fictional university the characters attended. It represents generations of family history.
Beyond the Gates Puts HBCU Homecoming in the Spotlight
The preview praised the storyline for its emphasis on Black history and HBCU culture, stating that the show is “celebrating OUR history.”
This makes the upcoming episodes particularly captivating, as Homecoming offers more than just a vibrant setting. It provides Beyond the Gates a chance to delve into tradition, family ties, and the history that influenced characters like Vernon and Anita.
And, naturally, it remains a soap opera.
A Dupree family gathering seldom remains completely free of drama for long. With tailgating, the big game, and numerous characters potentially coming together, there should be ample opportunity for celebration — and perhaps a bit of trouble along the way.
Are You Ready for Banneker Homecoming?
This looks like it could be one of those Beyond the Gates events that allows the show to slow down for a moment and celebrate its characters, their community, and their history while still keeping the ongoing stories moving.
