Burke may be heading off to college, but GH Executive Producer Frank Valentini has confirmed that the actress remains part of the General Hospital family — and the show has already worked out a plan that will allow her to return.
Speaking exclusively to Soap Opera Digest, Valentini shared the good news.
“Bluesy is still a part of the General Hospital family, and we worked it out so that she will come back on her holidays and school breaks.”
Valentini also made it clear that the show fully supports Burke as she takes this major step in her life.
“We are incredibly proud of her as she begins this exciting new chapter and starts her college journey.”
Charlotte’s Exit Suddenly Makes a Lot More Sense
Charlotte’s departure from Port Charles naturally raised questions about what it meant for the character’s future.
Now we know the real-life reason behind the storyline.
Burke is attending college out of state, which made maintaining the normal filming schedule difficult. Instead of permanently writing Charlotte out or immediately recasting the role, General Hospital found a solution that works around Burke’s school schedule.
That means Charlotte can return to Port Charles during Burke’s holidays and school breaks.
And according to Burke, leaving GH behind permanently was never something she wanted.
“I love my job and I didn’t want to leave it,” Burke told Soap Opera Digest.
She explained that she went directly to Valentini and told him what was happening in her life. His response apparently made the decision much easier.
Burke revealed that when she mentioned possibly taking a gap year, Valentini encouraged her to put her education first.
“No, you have to go to college, that’s so important and we will be here for you.”
That's a pretty wonderful way to handle a young performer reaching such an important milestone.
The Door Is Wide Open for Charlotte Cassadine
Perhaps the biggest takeaway for GH viewers is that the role of Charlotte is being kept open for Burke.
For Burke, knowing that she wasn't being forced to choose between college and the character she has played was incredibly meaningful.
She said knowing Charlotte would remain available to her “meant the world to me” and helped her feel better about making the decision to attend college.
Story-wise, this arrangement could actually work beautifully for Charlotte.
Charlotte has always been a character who can disappear from the canvas for stretches and then return when her family needs her most. With Valentin Cassadine, Lulu Spencer, Rocco Falconeri, Anna Devane and the rest of Charlotte’s complicated family connections still providing plenty of storyline possibilities, there are numerous reasons for her to pop back into Port Charles.
And now fans know those returns can happen.
This Isn't Goodbye — It's “See You on School Break”
For viewers who have grown attached to Burke's Charlotte, that's the best part of this news.
Her current exit isn't necessarily the beginning of the end. It's General Hospital accommodating the real life of one of its young performers while keeping Charlotte connected to the canvas.
Burke gets to begin her college experience without completely giving up a job she loves, while GH gets to bring Charlotte home whenever Burke's schedule allows.
So don't count Charlotte Cassadine out.
