Cameron Mathison Shares Emotional Story Of Overcoming Rare Childhood Disease

On Instagram, Mathison recently shared a deeply personal story about a medical challenge he faced when he was just a young boy — a struggle that ultimately shaped the person he is today.

A Difficult Diagnosis at a Young Age

According to Mathison, he was diagnosed with Legg‑Calvé‑Perthes disease when he was only two and a half years old. The rare childhood condition affects the hip joint and can weaken the femur, making it difficult for the legs to support the body’s weight.

To help his bones heal, Mathison wore a metal leg brace that held his legs apart.

“From the age of 2.5 to 7 I wore this metal leg brace day and night. It only came off when I was put in the bath,” Mathison shared.

The brace allowed the heads of his femur bones to heal and strengthen over several years.

Four Years of Determination

For nearly four years, Mathison relied on the brace to walk and move. The device kept his legs positioned outward so the damaged bones could properly regenerate. While it was undoubtedly a challenging time for a young child, the experience ultimately left a lasting positive impact on the actor.

Mathison says the journey taught him lessons that still guide his life today.

Lessons That Shaped His Life

Reflecting on the experience, Mathison explained that the condition helped him develop a deeper understanding of others who face hardships.

Among the lessons he says he learned:

  • Compassion for those struggling

  • Empathy for those being bullied

  • The importance of not defining yourself by limitations or challenges

He also credited someone very special for helping him through those difficult years — his brother.

Mathison shared that the final photos in his post included his brother, whom he called his “biggest champion and hero.”
