Christel Khalil Almost Quit Acting After Losing "That's So Raven" Role
Sometimes, the biggest disappointments lead to the greatest opportunities.
The Young and the Restless star Christel Khalil recently shared an incredible story about the audition that almost ended her acting career before it truly began. Thankfully for soap fans, one final audition changed everything.
During an appearance on Soapy, the CBS podcast hosted by Greg Rikaart (Days of Our Lives, The Young and the Restless) and Rebecca Budig (The Bold and the Beautiful), Khalil revealed that she came heartbreakingly close to landing the lead role in what would eventually become Disney Channel's That's So Raven.
At the time, the series wasn't even called That's So Raven.
"It was called Absolutely Psychic," Khalil explained. "It was between me and Raven-Symoné." When Raven-Symoné won the role, the series was renamed after her. For the 14-year-old Khalil, however, losing the part was devastating.
A Devastating Audition
Khalil admitted the final network audition was one of the toughest experiences of her young career. "There were like 20 people in the room watching me, and I've always had such performance anxiety," she recalled. "I completely bombed the audition. It was terrible." The disappointment hit so hard that she decided she was finished with acting altogether. "I was actually going to quit acting," Khalil said. "I got the final call for The Young and the Restless, and I wasn't even going to go. I thought, 'I'm done. I just want to hang out with my friends.'"
Her Brother Changed Everything
Fortunately, Khalil's older brother stepped in with advice that changed the course of her life. Having quit acting himself at the same age, he urged her not to make the same mistake. "He said, 'Christel, I promise you, I really regret quitting. Just go on this audition. If you don't get it, then you can quit.'" Khalil reluctantly agreed. "If I don't get it, I'm done."
Meeting Kristoff St. John Made All the Difference
That final audition turned out to be unlike anything she had experienced before.
Instead of reading in a casting office, Khalil participated in a full screen test alongside the late Kristoff St. John, who played Neil Winters.
"It was so easy to act with Kristoff because he's just so there," she said.
Being on the actual set—with makeup, cameras, and a seasoned scene partner—allowed Khalil to relax and fully immerse herself in the emotional material.
"I always had issues being emotional in auditions, but because I was there with him, it just came naturally," she explained. "It happened, and I felt so good."
That unforgettable screen test ultimately earned Khalil the role of Lily Winters, launching one of daytime television's most celebrated careers.
A Career That "Almost" Never Happened
Looking back, it's incredible to think that one disappointing Disney audition nearly cost daytime television one of its brightest stars. Had Christel Khalil skipped that final The Young and the Restless audition, fans may never have seen the beloved Lily Winters become one of Genoa City's most enduring characters. Sometimes, one "no" truly does lead to the perfect "yes."
