Instead of allowing the people who love James most to have that difficult conversation, everyone seemed content to let Cody shoulder the burden. It felt less like an act of compassion and more like the entire family using him as a convenient scapegoat.
Why was Cody expected to be the one to carry that emotional weight? James has parents. He has grandparents. He has an entire support system that should have stepped up instead of standing back.
Maxie Jones (Kirsten Storms) and Damian Spinelli (Bradford Anderson) are James' parents. As painful as the conversation would have been, it was their responsibility to sit down with their son, answer his questions, comfort him, and help him process the devastating news. Those are the moments that define parenthood, even when they're unimaginably difficult.
If Maxie and Spinelli couldn't bring themselves to do it, then Mac Scorpio (John J. York) and Felicia Scorpio (Kristina Wagner)—James' loving grandparents—would have been the next logical choice. They have always been protective, compassionate, and deeply involved in their family's lives. Having them share the news would have carried emotional weight while surrounding James with people he trusts completely.
Instead, Cody was put in an impossible position. No matter how gently he handled it, he was left carrying the emotional fallout from a decision that never should have been his to make. It also risked making James associate Cody with one of the worst moments of his young life.
The storyline ultimately felt unfair to Cody. Rather than showing the family rallying together during a tragedy, it came across as everyone avoiding an uncomfortable responsibility and leaving Cody to clean up the emotional mess. That isn't heroic—it feels like passing the buck.
Cody has enough on his plate without being forced into a role that belonged to James' parents or grandparents. The emotional responsibility should have remained with the adults who have been raising and supporting James all along.
What should have been a powerful family moment instead became a frustrating example of responsibility being shifted onto the wrong person.
