Daytime Emmy Season Begins: Major Changes Set For 53rd Annual Awards

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has opened submissions for the 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards as of March 19, 2026, launching the countdown to one of the most anticipated nights in the industry. Along with key dates for the upcoming ceremony, NATAS has also unveiled several significant rule changes that could reshape the competition for daytime’s top honors.

Key Dates Announced

Submissions are now open, with nominations set to be revealed in July 2026. The ceremony itself will take place on Friday, October 30, 2026, in Los Angeles.

These announcements signal the official start of Emmy season for fan-favorite soaps, including General Hospital, The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful, Days of Our Lives, and Beyond the Gates.

Craft Categories Undergo Major Shift

One of the most notable updates affects the craft categories, including hair styling, makeup, and costume design. Moving forward, the Daytime Emmys will adopt a format similar to the Primetime Emmys. Instead of submitting clip reels, shows must now submit a full episode for consideration. Additionally, only the specific crew members credited on that episode will be eligible for nomination, rather than the entire department as in previous years. This change allows for multiple entries from the same show, meaning a single series could potentially earn multiple nominations within the same category if different episodes are submitted.

Separation of Fiction and Non-Fiction Entries

In a move that many soap fans will welcome, categories may now be split between fiction and non-fiction if at least 10 submissions are received.

This means daytime dramas like General Hospital and The Young and the Restless will no longer have to compete directly against talk shows such as The Drew Barrymore Show and Sherri in certain craft categories, creating a more balanced and genre-specific competition.

Guest Performer Category Tightened

Changes have also been made to the Guest Performer in a Daytime Drama Series category. To qualify, actors must now appear in no more than 19% of a show’s episodes during the calendar year. Performers who appear in 20% or more must instead submit in Lead, Supporting, or Emerging Talent categories.

This adjustment aims to ensure that the guest category remains reserved for truly limited appearances.

New Judging Structure Introduced

NATAS has also updated its judging process. Voting will now be conducted exclusively by members of NATAS, the Television Academy, or individuals who belong to both organizations. Additionally, categories that consistently struggle to assemble a full judging panel may be considered for elimination in future years, signaling a push toward streamlining the awards.

A More Competitive Emmy Season Ahead

With these changes in place, the 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards are poised to be more competitive and strategic than ever before. From episode selection to category placement, every decision could have a major impact on who takes home the gold. For longtime viewers and dedicated soap fans, this year’s race promises not only standout performances—but also a reshaped playing field that could redefine how daytime excellence is recognized. As the industry prepares for nominations this summer, one thing is clear: the road to the Daytime Emmys has officially begun.
