Francis’ character, Mayor Laura Collins, recently revealed to Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) and ADA Justine Turner (Nanzeen Contractor) that she is taking a leave of absence from her mayoral duties. Laura plans to travel abroad to visit her husband, Kevin Collins (Jon Lindstrom), and her grandson Ace in Ireland.

Before leaving Port Charles, Laura attempted to settle some unfinished business involving Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) and his rival, Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison).

During the August 31 episode, Laura met with the two men at the Metro Court Hotel and announced that she would soon be leaving town. Concerned about what might happen in her absence, Laura urged Sonny and Drew to call a ceasefire.

Laura specifically asked Drew to withdraw from the Pier 55 auction so Sonny could reclaim his property. Unsurprisingly, the request did not go over well with Drew, who showed no interest in backing down from his battle with Sonny.

Laura may be leaving Port Charles with tensions still running high, but fans shouldn’t worry. Francis’ absence is only temporary, and the beloved actress is expected to return to General Hospital this fall.
