Genie Francis Gets Emotional Remembering Tony Geary: “He Made Me Who I Am Today”

Get the tissues ready, General Hospital fans! Genie Francis is preparing for one of the biggest honors of her career, but her upcoming Lifetime Achievement Award has also brought back emotional memories of her late co-star, Anthony “Tony” Geary.

Genie Francis Gets Emotional Remembering Tony Geary: “He Made Me Who I Am Today”

During a touching interview with Extra's Derek Hough, Francis became visibly emotional while reflecting on the man who helped make Luke and Laura one of daytime television's most unforgettable couples.

An Emotional Tribute to Tony Geary

As Francis remembered her longtime scene partner, she struggled to hold back tears.

“I'm going to cry. He made me who I am today.”

The actress went on to describe Geary as loving and kind, crediting him with teaching her so much throughout their years working together.

Geary, who portrayed Luke Spencer, passed away in December 2025 at age 78. His death left a tremendous void in the soap opera community, particularly for fans who grew up watching his legendary partnership with Francis.

Their characters' 1981 wedding attracted approximately 30 million viewers, becoming one of the most celebrated moments in daytime television history.

Genie Reveals a Touching Connection to Tony

One of the interview's most personal revelations came when Francis shared that she still wears Geary's cologne.

She recalled how much she loved the fragrance whenever she hugged him. After asking what it was, Geary told her it was unisex and encouraged her to wear it herself.

It's a beautiful reminder that sometimes the smallest things carry the biggest memories.

Francis also reflected on their iconic partnership with a simple sentiment from Laura to Luke: “Thank you for the dance.”

For longtime General Hospital viewers, those words carry decades of television history, friendship, and unforgettable performances.

A Lifetime Achievement Award Fit for a Legend

On Friday, October 30, 2026, Francis will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards.

Making the evening even more special, her husband, actor and director Jonathan Frakes, will present her with the prestigious honor.

Francis described the recognition as a wonderful feeling of accomplishment and admitted that having her husband beside her will help calm her nerves.

The beloved actress first appeared on General Hospital in 1977, beginning a remarkable career that has spanned nearly five decades.

She also appeared on All My Children, Days of Our Lives, and The Young and the Restless, cementing her status as one of daytime television's most recognizable performers.

A Legacy That Will Never Be Forgotten

While Francis prepares to celebrate her extraordinary career, it's clear that Geary's influence remains an important part of her story.

Luke and Laura may belong to television history, but the friendship, chemistry, and memories behind those characters continue to touch generations of viewers.

Congratulations, Genie Francis! This Lifetime Achievement Award is richly deserved, and Tony Geary's legacy will always be part of the celebration.
