Former General Hospital actor Charles Mesure (ex-Brennan) has broken his silence about his abrupt departure from the soap, and he’s not holding back. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Mesure directly addressed speculation about why he left, and his words shed new light on the behind-the-scenes reality.

Setting the Record Straight
The discussion began after Mesure reposted a comment from former co-star Laura Wright (Carly Spencer), who had referred fans to an article for answers. Wright’s brief reply, “it’s in the article,” prompted Mesure to step in and dispute the accuracy of that coverage.
“Not true. The ‘article’ completely misrepresents an old and irrelevant interview. In fact, I loved every aspect of the work on GH and loved working with every scene partner. I’m proud of every single scene we did with the Brennan character. However, I hated every aspect of the toxic, borderline sinister backstage politics on GH.”
Mesure’s Clarification
To avoid confusion, Mesure expanded further on his decision:
“I know there are many of my colleagues who are very happy in the GH environment and I’m happy for them. It’s not for me to judge, so I’ll clarify. I left GH because, very personally and very subjectively, I found what I can only describe as the ‘backstage politics’ to be disturbing and unprecedented and so damaging to the work that I felt unable to continue.”
Love for the Work, Not the Politics
Mesure made it clear that his frustrations were not with the role of Brennan itself, nor with his castmates. On the contrary, he praised his co-stars and said he remained proud of the work they produced together. But the “toxic” environment off-screen was, in his words, simply too damaging to endure.

Mesure’s candor has sparked fresh discussion among fans about the pressures and challenges of working in daytime television. While many actors thrive in the soap opera environment, his comments highlight how creative passion can sometimes clash with behind-the-scenes realities.
