Hollywood Legend June Lockhart Dies at 100
The legendary actress passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at 9:20 p.m. local time in Santa Monica, California, of natural causes. Her daughter, June Elizabeth, and granddaughter, Christianna, were by her side.
Born in 1925 in New York City, June Lockhart was destined for the spotlight. Both her parents, Gene and Kathleen Lockhart, were actors, and she made her stage debut at just 8 years old in the Metropolitan Opera production of Peter Ibbetson.
Her first film role came in 1938’s A Christmas Carol, where she acted alongside her parents — playing the daughter of Bob Cratchit (portrayed by her real-life father). She would go on to appear in beloved classics such as Meet Me in St. Louis and She-Wolf of London.
Lockhart transitioned seamlessly to television, beginning in 1949 with appearances on Hallmark Hall of Fame, Shirley Temple's Storybook, Wagon Train, and Gunsmoke.
Her breakout small-screen role came in 1958, when she joined Lassie as Ruth Martin, the warm-hearted mother of Timmy (Jon Provost). Later, she became forever immortalized as Maureen Robinson on Lost in Space (1965–1968), the matriarch of a family of space colonists in the cult classic inspired by The Swiss Family Robinson.
After Lost in Space, Lockhart joined Petticoat Junction for its final two seasons, continuing to showcase her signature grace and strength.
Lockhart’s television credits spanned decades, with appearances on Marcus Welby, M.D., Magnum, P.I., Knots Landing, Murder, She Wrote, Full House, General Hospital, Grey’s Anatomy, Babylon 5, and Roseanne—where she memorably played the mother of Martin Mull’s Leon. She once told People in 1995 that her appearance on Roseanne was “the highlight of my career.”
In all, June Lockhart amassed over 150 film and television credits, leaving behind a legacy that bridges Hollywood’s Golden Age and the modern era.
Funeral services will be private. In place of flowers, her family requests donations be made to The Actors Fund, ProPublica, and International Hearing Dog, Inc.
