Young, who played JR Chandler on the beloved daytime drama, marked the anniversary with an emotional tribute on Instagram to the soap, its creator Agnes Nixon, the people who worked behind the scenes, his fellow cast members and, most importantly, the viewers who welcomed the residents of Pine Valley into their homes for decades.
Jacob Young Looks Back on Playing JR Chandler
For Young, All My Children wasn’t simply another acting job.
Playing JR Chandler became an important chapter of his career, and 15 years after the show's ABC finale, Young reflected on just how much being part of the Pine Valley family continues to mean to him.
Young wrote that what made the soap special went far beyond the stories viewers watched unfold on television. It was also about the actors, writers, producers, directors and crews who brought those stories to life — and the loyal audience that formed a connection with the characters.
“These characters became part of people’s lives, and in many ways, they became part of ours too,” Young reflected.
For longtime AMC viewers, that sentiment probably hits home.
Soap fans don't simply watch characters for a few weeks or months. They can spend years — sometimes decades — watching them fall in love, break apart, make terrible decisions, rebuild their lives and become part of fictional families that somehow begin to feel familiar.
JR Chandler certainly gave viewers plenty of those moments.
Young Pays Tribute to Agnes Nixon
Young also made sure to honor the woman who created Pine Valley in the first place: legendary soap creator Agnes Nixon.
He described Nixon's storytelling as “fearless, compassionate, groundbreaking, and always deeply human,” while expressing his gratitude for being entrusted with bringing one of her characters to life.
It's difficult to talk about All My Children without talking about Nixon's influence on daytime television.
Pine Valley became a place where romance and family drama could exist alongside stories dealing with complicated social issues. Through it all, viewers kept returning because the characters remained at the center of the storytelling.
That connection helped All My Children survive for more than four decades on ABC.
Fifteen Years Later, Pine Valley Still Matters
All My Children aired its final ABC episode on September 23, 2011, ending a network run that began in 1970.
And what a way to leave viewers hanging. JR was at the center of one of the show's final unforgettable moments as the troubled Chandler heir aimed a gun toward the gathering at the Chandler mansion. A gunshot rang out — and the screen went black.
It was exactly the kind of cliffhanger designed to leave soap fans talking.
Fifteen years later, they're still talking about All My Children.
Young believes that says something important about what the series meant to its audience.
“Some shows simply end. Others stay with you forever,” he wrote.
For generations of viewers who spent their weekdays visiting Pine Valley, All My Children clearly belongs in that second category.
Young ended his tribute by saying Pine Valley will always hold a special place in his heart.
Judging by the continued affection surrounding the soap 15 years later, he certainly isn't alone.
