In a Soap Opera Digest interview, Jason Thompson reveals just how far Billy Abbott is willing to go as The Young and the Restless heats up with Cane’s (Billy Flynn) return.
Jason Thompson On Billy’s Master Plan, Playing Both Sides, And The Question Of Trust
With Cane back in Genoa City, Billy sees an opportunity to team up and wrestle Chancellor away from Victor and Nikki Newman, a move Thompson says Billy has been craving.
"As much as he’s tried, he cannot put that to rest," Thompson explains. "He wants to do it for many reasons. Not only to run that company, but also to prove to his mother that he is capable, prove to his mother that he can be just as devious as every other businessperson in the city that goes above and beyond to do whatever they need to do in order to win. He wants his piece, and he believes that’s Chancellor."
But there’s a catch: Cane’s plans come with strings Billy doesn’t like, including seizing Jabot, his father’s legacy.
"It changes almost on the daily who he feels he can trust," Thompson notes. "One day it’s Cane, one day it’s Jack, one day Sally… but in the master plan, they’re all trying to outmaneuver each other."
Right now, Cane holds significant leverage, with the potential to “wipe everyone out and have total control of the city.” Still, Billy refuses to let his family lose Jabot to Cane, even as he plots to reclaim Chancellor and stick it to Victor.
Thompson teases that Billy is “playing both sides,” keeping Jack close for Abbott Communications, doing right by Sally, and maneuvering through multiple alliances at once.
"He’s got his hands in plenty of cookie jars," Thompson says. "Trying to figure out who can be played and also not get played at the same time."
In the end, trust is the rarest currency in Genoa City. Thompson admits,
"There’s really not many people that Billy really truly feels like he can trust… Ultimately, I think he does know that he can trust Jack, but they don’t always see eye to eye. He quickly learns that he can’t trust Cane or anyone else that Cane’s working with."
As Billy’s web of alliances shifts daily, one question looms large: in this game of power, who can you trust?
