Mary Beth Evans Reflects On 40 Years Of Kayla And Steve’s Epic Love Story
Over the years, Kayla’s surname may have changed to Johnson following her iconic romance and marriage to Steve “Patch” Johnson, played by Stephen Nichols, but the legacy of “Stayla” has remained one of the most enduring love stories in soap opera history.
To honor Evans’ remarkable anniversary, Days of Our Lives will air a special tribute episode on May 22 featuring heartfelt flashbacks that revisit the unforgettable journey of Steve and Kayla. In an emotional interview with TV Insider, Evans reflected on the role that changed her life forever and the magical chemistry she shared with Nichols from the very beginning.
“I feel so lucky because it really gave me such a beautiful life,” Evans shared. “I think about the connection that Stephen and I had from the beginning, and what a beautiful love story was written. They don’t make supercouples like that anymore. Back then, if they saw the spark and that it worked, they really ran with it. I was lucky to be paired with him.”
When Evans first auditioned for Days in 1986, she was simply hoping for steady work as an actress. At the time, she had appeared in episodic television projects, including Knight Rider, but acting jobs had slowed down significantly.
“I had been doing other things, like guest episodics and whatever was going on at the time,” Evans recalled. “My husband was a resident, so he didn’t make very much money. We bought a house, and I hadn’t been getting jobs for, like, six months. I put in an application for a restaurant job, and then I had this audition for Days of Our Lives.”
In a twist worthy of Salem itself, Evans decided to delay picking up her restaurant uniform while waiting to hear back about the role — a decision that ultimately changed her life forever.
Looking back, Evans believes the key to Steve and Kayla’s legendary appeal was the emotional depth behind the romance. Steve may have been Salem’s rebellious “bad boy,” but beneath the leather jacket and eye patch was a man with an enormous heart.
“He was a bad boy, but he had a big heart, and that’s why the coupling worked,” Evans explained. “Kayla saw the good in him when other people didn’t, and what woman wouldn’t want to have a guy look at her like that and see her truly and honestly?”
Forty years later, the actress remains deeply grateful to the loyal fans who have stood by Steve and Kayla through every heartbreak, reunion, and emotional chapter. For Evans, the lasting success of the pairing goes beyond romance — it represents something meaningful and aspirational. “I appreciate that they’ve gone on this journey with us,” she shared. “It’s been a long time, but I hope that we inspire people to have healthy, good, heartfelt, and honest relationships. That’s what I’m always striving for here.”
In an era where soap opera supercouples are increasingly rare, Steve and Kayla continue to stand as one of daytime’s most cherished romances — and after 40 years, their love story still resonates with generations of fans.
