The moment he saw Phyllis kiss Matt Clark, Nick completely unraveled. For someone who insists he's moved on, he certainly didn't behave like a man who has no emotional investment in his ex-wife's love life. Let's call it what it looked like: jealousy.
Yes, Matt Clark has a troubling past. Yes, Nick has every reason to distrust him. But there comes a point where "I'm just trying to protect you" starts sounding an awful lot like "I don't want you with anyone else."
Nick crossed that line.
Instead of accepting that Phyllis is an adult capable of making her own choices—good or bad—he immediately jumped into rescue mode. He barked orders at Matt, demanded he leave town, and acted as though Phyllis needed his permission to decide who she spends time with.
She doesn't. In fact, Phyllis made that crystal clear when she reminded Nick that Matt isn't the same man who terrorized the Newman family years ago. Whether she's right or wrong isn't even the point. The point is what she decides to make. Nick simply couldn't accept that.
Even Victoria noticed it. When Nick later complained that Phyllis had taken Matt upstairs, Victoria asked the question everyone watching was probably thinking: "Are you jealous?" Instead of giving a convincing answer, Nick immediately went on another rant about how dangerous Matt is.
Convenient.
It's much easier to hide behind concern than admit your ex kissing another man bothers you.
Then came the biggest giveaway of all.
Nick didn't simply walk away after warning Phyllis. He started pounding on the door just as things between her and Matt were turning intimate.
Seriously? What exactly was the plan here? Was Nick expecting Phyllis to thank him for interrupting her private life? Was he hoping she'd suddenly realize Matt was a mistake and run into his arms?
It was an astonishing display of entitlement. Phyllis may have made a reckless decision, but she's still entitled to make it. Nick doesn't get to appoint himself her personal bodyguard simply because he disapproves.
Of course, Matt could absolutely be manipulating her. That's a real possibility, and Nick's instincts may ultimately prove correct. But being right about Matt doesn't automatically make Nick right about his behavior. There's a fine line between genuine concern and refusing to let go, and Nick spent this entire episode stomping all over it.
The truth is, if Nick had truly moved on, he would've warned Phyllis once and let her make her own decision. Instead, he chased after her, obsessed over what she was doing, and reacted exactly like a man who can't stand seeing his ex with someone else.
Whether Nick wants to admit it or not, Phyllis clearly still gets under his skin.
And until he stops trying to control what she does and who she sees, it's going to be very difficult to believe he's really over her.
