After experiencing headaches and vision issues for several weeks, Nikki and Victoria Newman consult with Dr. Nowling to review the results of Nikki's urgent MRI. Nikki is surprised by the doctor's prompt action, but Dr. Nowling explains that, given her history of multiple sclerosis, they wanted to be cautious.
Sadly, the MRI reveals something much more serious than stress. Dr. Nowling tells Nikki there's a mass pressing against her optic nerve. If it isn't treated successfully, she could lose her eyesight. As Nikki and Victoria look over the MRI images, Dr. Nowling explains that the location of the mass makes it difficult to treat. While radiation is one possibility, he believes surgery offers Nikki the best chance of removing it. The problem is that surgery comes with a major risk of its own.
Because the mass is so close to Nikki's optic nerve, the operation itself could leave her blind. It's a devastating choice to face, and Nikki is left completely shaken by the news. Dr. Nowling encourages her not to wait too long before making a decision and promises he'll do everything he can to give her the best possible outcome.
Once the doctor leaves, Victoria does her best to reassure her mom. She tells Nikki they'll fight this together and look at every available option.
Nikki is still trying to wrap her head around everything she's just heard. One doctor's appointment has completely changed her outlook, and now she has an impossible decision to make.
