Is Y&R really pursuing a storyline with Nate and Stephanie?
Considering the tangled Winters family connections, this possibility becomes even more complicated.
Remember Stephanie and Malcolm?
Vivica A. Fox played Dr. Stephanie Simmons from 1994-95, when she was romantically involved with Malcolm Winters. After decades in Manhattan building her medical career, Stephanie returned to Genoa City in April 2026, reuniting with Shemar Moore's Malcolm after nearly 30 years. She's not just making a brief appearance; she's staying and becoming deeply involved in Nate's medical storyline.
Let's Talk About This Family Tree
Nate is the biological son of Olivia Barber and the late Nathan Hastings Sr. Olivia later married Malcolm Winters, who became an important father figure to Nate. Malcolm had a romance with Stephanie, who revealed that Holden Novak is her biological son, and Holden discovered Malcolm is his biological father. So, Malcolm and Stephanie share a son. Now, there's potential for Stephanie to flirt with Nate, whom Malcolm helped raise. Y&R, please tell me we're misreading this. Genoa City's family trees are complicated enough without needing a flowchart to determine whether two characters should be flirting.

The storyline begins with Nate telling Stephanie he's considering surgery on his injured hand to return to medicine, surprising her as he previously wasn't serious about returning. Nate admits Stephanie changed his mind, making it the perfect storyline for her. As an accomplished physician, she could mentor Nate and help him reclaim his career. Stephanie expresses interest in seeing him return to Genoa City Memorial if the surgery succeeds. However, the vibe shifts when Stephanie suggests celebrating at Society, but Nate proposes dinner at his place, where he'll cook.
Grilled Cheese...With A Side Of Chemistry?
Soon Stephanie is in Nate's kitchen while he prepares dinner. They're playfully teasing and arguing about sports teams. Stephanie jokes about Nate's culinary skills, discovering his creation is grilled cheese and tomato soup. Nate insists she shouldn't judge until tasting the soup, hinting at a surprise dessert. When asked about his secret ingredient, Nate quips that it's not about chefs keeping secrets, but rather a doctor never admits how much butter he uses. Stephanie jokes that Nate could consider culinary school if surgery doesn't restore his hand function for medicine. That's when things become more interesting.

While this could be an innocent friendship as Stephanie supports Nate's return to medicine, the private dinner, playful banter, hand-holding, and plans for another dinner suggest soap-opera dynamics.
But What About Malcolm?!
This potential pairing is unusual. It's not just Stephanie dating a younger Genoa City bachelor; it's Malcolm Winters' former love interest possibly getting involved with a man Malcolm helped raise. Plus, Stephanie and Malcolm share Holden! Imagine explaining at a Winters family gathering: "Stephanie used to date Malcolm, Malcolm helped raise Nate, Malcolm and Stephanie share Holden...and now Stephanie and Nate are dating." Even for a soap, that's complex. Earlier this year, Y&R made a big deal of reuniting Vivica A. Fox and Shemar Moore. After waiting decades to pair Malcolm and Stephanie, would the show test Stephanie with Nate? Apparently, anything is possible.
