The Young and the Restless icon Peter Bergman (Jack Abbott) has stepped outside Genoa City for an unexpected new project — appearing in Vince Gilligan’s highly secretive Apple TV+ series Pluribus.

In an interview with TV Insider, the three-time Daytime Emmy winner opened up about how the opportunity came about — and how his longtime friendship with Bryan Cranston helped pave the way.

A Role Born from Friendship

Bergman didn’t have to audition. The offer came straight from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul creator Vince Gilligan, thanks to a friendship dating back to the soap world of the 1980s.

“Bryan and I met each other on a softball field in Central Park when I was on All My Children and he was on Loving, and we’ve been friends since,” Bergman recalled. “His wife, Robin, and my wife, Mariellen, are very dear friends, and we vacation together.”

Through Cranston, Bergman met Gilligan — and the rest was history.

“Vince and his wife Holly are just the loveliest people in the world,” he said. “We’ve had them in our home, and we’ve done lots of things together. So Vince texted me and said, ‘Hey, I have this thing coming up that I think you’d be perfect for.’ I said, ‘As long as it fits into my Y&R schedule, I’d love that.’”

A Top-Secret Set

The project’s secrecy impressed even a veteran like Bergman.

“I had to sign an NDA — it was a watermarked script and very secretive,” he revealed. “They changed all the names, and between Vince first talking about it and my shooting back in January, it had three names — none of them were Pluribus.”

Bergman’s role, initially labeled Distinguished Gentleman, tested his soap-honed dialogue skills:

“Once they said, ‘Action,’ I was talking for almost seven pages,” Bergman laughed. “When you watch it, you’ll understand why we had to shoot it straight through every time.”

Though he appears in the last seven minutes of the first episode, Bergman promises the scene will be memorable — and fans are eager to see his work under Gilligan’s direction.

Pluribus is now streaming on Apple TV+, marking another milestone for the Y&R legend who continues to prove his range beyond Genoa City.
