In a recent interview with TVLine, actress Ambyr Michelle opened up about playing the layered and emotionally resonant Eva Thomas on Beyond the Gates. The role, she says, has struck a powerful chord with viewers.

Michelle explains her fan-favorite character.
“A lot of the fans are relating to her with the trauma they’ve been through, the healing process they’re going through. I’m just a grateful little butterfly, to be honest, for everyone to be supporting us like this.”
The series marks a rare moment in daytime television history, the launch of a brand-new soap opera, something that hasn’t happened in 25 years. Michelle admits there was uncertainty about how audiences would receive it, especially given its predominantly African-American cast.

“When you do a new soap opera, which hasn’t been done in [25 years], you don’t know how people are going to receive it, especially being African-American predominately,” she shares.
But Beyond the Gates has exceeded expectations, winning over viewers from all backgrounds. Michelle credits the show’s universal themes of family and belonging for bringing people together.
“It’s a diverse audience that’s coming together and talking about the show, which is what we all wanted,” she says. “No matter Black, white, Asian, Indian — it doesn’t matter. Everyone is talking about the show and relating to the characters, bypassing race.”
With its rich storytelling and relatable characters, Beyond the Gates is proving that authentic representation and human connection can transcend cultural boundaries — a fact that Michelle, like her character Eva, embraces wholeheartedly.
