On the May 20 episode, Gatekeepers watched in heartbreak as Derek Baldwin collapsed after being shot during the chaos surrounding the dangerous blood plasma sting operation. Despite being rushed to Garland Memorial Hospital, Derek ultimately succumbed to his injuries, leaving fans stunned by the tragic loss of one of the soap’s rising heroes.

In a candid interview with TV Insider, Gavin reflected on learning that Derek’s journey would end dramatically and emotionally. The actor revealed that he was informed in late December 2025 that the writers had decided Derek would be killed off as part of a major turning point for the series. “It was definitely a shocker,” Gavin admitted. “They made it pretty clear this was something that they needed, and for the sake of the story, it couldn’t just be anyone. It had to be someone that they started to really care about to hook the audience, and I understood that.”

According to Gavin, executive producer Julie Hanan Carruthers personally walked him through Derek’s emotional farewell arc. In true heroic fashion, Derek took a bullet meant for Jacob Hawthorne, played by Jibre Hordges, during the climax of the explosive plasma operation storyline. “She made it pretty clear that, ‘You’re gonna die a hero,’” Gavin shared. “And Derek’s got a hero complex, so it’s only fitting. I get the nature of it, but it didn’t make it any less difficult to swallow.”

While saying goodbye to the character was painful, Gavin described filming Derek’s final episodes as one of the most rewarding experiences of his time on the soap. The actor praised the production team for dedicating extra care and attention to the emotional scenes, noting that the farewell felt far bigger than a typical day on a daytime set.

“It was awesome,” Gavin relayed. “It was not the typical day on set of a soap. We were doing multiple takes, and I’m glad they put that time and effort into it. I know it’s a big storyline in general, but being that it was my character’s farewell, I’m glad there was a lot of attention put into it. It really felt like they cared about it.”

Derek Baldwin’s death now leaves a massive void on Beyond The Gates and is certain to send shockwaves through Ashley, Jacob, and the entire Fairmont Crest community in the weeks ahead. For many viewers, Derek’s heroic sacrifice instantly cements him as one of the soap’s most tragic and memorable losses yet.
