Ever since arriving in Fairmont Crest, Deanna has made it clear she doesn't trust Joey Armstrong (Jon Lindstrom). While she's pretending to accept his relationship with her mother, Vanessa McBride (Lauren Buglioli), her true mission has been to uncover what really happened to her father, Dr. Doug McBride (Jason Graham).
Doug's tragic death has never sat right with Deanna. Officially, his car plunged into a ravine and erupted in flames after he finally hit it big at the casino. But the circumstances surrounding his death are difficult to ignore. Doug owed Joey Armstrong a substantial gambling debt, and Joey had already become romantically involved with Vanessa before Doug died. Joey truly orchestrated Doug's fatal crash, which was carried out by Marcel Malone (Darryl W. Handy). Deanna's investigation is putting her directly in the crosshairs of a man who has already proven how ruthless he can be.
Deanna has cleverly hidden her true intentions. She's been acting cordial toward Joey, giving the impression that she's finally accepted him. In reality, she's trying to gather evidence tying him to money laundering, the escort service app, and avenging her father's death. By keeping Joey close, she hoped to catch him making a mistake.
The problem? Joey doesn't appear fooled anymore. At the end of the July 16 episode, Joey's expression suggested he has figured out that Deanna's change of heart isn't genuine. If Joey believes she's collecting evidence against him, he may decide she's become too dangerous to leave alive.
That raises an unsettling possibility. Could history repeat itself?
Joey has already demonstrated he's willing to eliminate anyone standing in his way if it protects his criminal empire. If Deanna gets too close to proving his involvement in Doug's death, she could become his next target.
Whether it's a staged accident, a disappearance, or another elaborate cover-up, Joey has the resources and connections to make almost anything happen.
However, Deanna may have one advantage her father didn't. She already suspects Joey is capable of murder. That knowledge could make her more cautious and perhaps lead her to share her evidence with someone she trusts before it's too late.
The bigger question is whether Vanessa will realize the danger before she loses another member of her family. Deanna's relentless search for the truth could put her on the exact same deadly path. Sometimes getting too close to the truth comes with the highest price.
