Bryton James, best known to daytime fans as billionaire Devon Hamilton on The Young and the Restless, is looking to bring a primetime classic back to life, with a fresh twist.
Bryton James Pursues Family Matters Animated Reboot
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly (read here), James revealed that he has been working on an animated reboot of the beloved ABC sitcom Family Matters. Fans will remember James joined the series as Richie Crawford from season two until its finale in 1998.
“It’s been 27 years since the show ended, and I’ve had an idea to take the show and turn it into an animated series,” James shared. “The concept would involve taking the old episodes, modernizing them, and kind of starting from scratch for a new generation.”
James explained that he has been pitching the idea to Warner Bros., who currently hold the rights, though the project has not advanced beyond the interest stage. A Warner Bros. Animation source confirmed to EW that while James’ vision has been heard, the reboot is still in limbo.
In the meantime, James continues to shine on daytime television. Alongside his Emmy-winning role on The Young and the Restless, he recently made a special crossover appearance on CBS’s newest soap Beyond the Gates.
While the reboot’s future remains uncertain, James remains determined to reintroduce the Winslow family and Steve Urkel’s unforgettable antics to a brand-new audience.
