In an emotional and candid interview with TV Insider, Emmy-winning actor Jonathan Jackson has opened up about his unexpected departure from General Hospital, where he recently reprised his iconic role as Lucky Spencer.

Jackson revealed that it was never his intention for this return to be so brief. “It was more of a real, sincere attempt from myself and from General Hospital to make it work for a longer period of time,” he shared. “The hope was to be able to stay on longer.”

The challenge, as Jackson explained, came down to logistics and family. The actor, a husband and father of three, has been traveling between California — where GH films — and Tennessee, where his family resides. That constant back-and-forth eventually took its toll. “There was always that possibility because it was a bit of an experiment on my part to see if I could make it work with the family dynamic,” Jackson said.

He admitted there were moments when he thought he could make it work. “Then you just have to pray about it and try to do what you feel is right. We gave it our best shot, but we weren’t able to keep it going.”

Jackson emphasized that he stayed present and took things “one day at a time, but also one month at a time,” always reassessing the balance between work and home.

The actor also expressed deep gratitude to General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini, crediting him for making the return possible. “None of this would have happened at all if Frank wasn’t so open and helpful to even get it this far. That’s definitely something I’ve been extremely blessed by.”

Jackson’s final scenes are expected to air this week.
