“It Had No Limits”
Katelyn MacMullen on Willow’s General Hospital Breakdown
In an exclusive interview with Soap Opera Digest (source), Katelyn MacMullen reflected on the pivotal day of filming Willow’s emotional breakdown, which featured powerful scenes alongside Rory Gibson (Michael), Laura Wright (Carly), Cynthia Watros (Nina), and Sofia Mattsson (Sasha).
“That day was weirdly exciting but nerve-wracking, for sure,” MacMullen recalled. “Because I was like, ‘Okay, it’s kind of all been leading to this moment.’ I definitely felt like it required a pretty large reaction, considering Willow was losing custody of her children.”
She continued, “Going into it, I was just like, ‘Okay, this is gonna be scary.’ But at the same time, they gave me so much room to play and run around and grab people — of course, with their permission — and there was so much freedom in that because I could take it as far as I wanted to. That’s what made it weirdly exciting, but it was also a really exhausting day.”
The emotionally charged material demanded everything from MacMullen, but she was quick to credit her castmates for their support. “Everyone in that room was so helpful and so present and so supportive,” she said. “Especially Cynthia [Watros], Laura [Wright], and Sofia [Mattsson] — I went to each of their dressing rooms like, ‘What are your thoughts?’ They were so helpful both on the day and before, because we all kind of knew it was coming.”
MacMullen also turned to an acting coach to help her prepare. “She was kind of like, ‘You have to unleash, because this is Willow losing the most precious thing in the world to her.’ It was like, ‘You can’t take it far enough, essentially.’”
The aftermath of Willow’s outburst saw her hospitalized — a moment MacMullen believes was more than just shock. “My take is that when you receive really horrible news, sometimes at first your brain doesn’t process it in real time. Then realizing what was happening, I feel like she maybe had a little bit of a break from reality,” she said. “It’s like all the trauma that someone has experienced catching up with them in a moment and being reactivated. I would definitely say it was, in a sense, a mental breakdown.”
MacMullen’s performance resonated deeply with fans who have followed Willow’s harrowing journey — and based on her reflections, the emotional depth of the scenes wasn’t just on-screen. It was a powerful, collaborative, and creatively freeing experience for the actress — one that pushed her to new heights.
“I was really grateful for the chance to even get to touch writing like that,” she said. “Because it had no limits.”
