Days of Our Lives star Stephen Nichols (Steve “Patch” Johnson) took to Instagram to share an emotional tribute to his late friend and longtime co-star Drake Hogestyn (John Black) on the first anniversary of his passing.

Nichols recalled the exact moment he received the devastating news.

“I remember so vividly — one year ago today — getting the news that Drake had passed. Lisa and I were sitting in a theater in Burbank, having just watched a short film made by one of our #Days directors. In the middle of the Q&A, an email came in. Just like that… Drake was gone.”

Although Nichols admitted he knew the day would eventually come, the loss still struck with shocking force.

“Even though I knew the day would come, it hit me like a punch. And it still does.”

Nichols praised Hogestyn’s boundless positivity, storytelling, and generosity, noting the impact he had not only on his colleagues but on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

“Like so many of my colleagues — and everyone lucky enough to know him — I find it hard to believe he’s not here… telling stories, lifting spirits, spreading his love and positivity everywhere he went. Drake, you left your mark, buddy. On me, and on the hearts of so many others.”

Hogestyn, who originated the role of John Black in 1986, became one of Days of Our Lives’ most beloved and enduring characters. His warmth and charisma off-screen made him equally admired by co-stars and fans alike.

As Nichols’ moving words prove, Drake Hogestyn’s legacy continues to live on in Salem and far beyond.
